UPDATE: July 4, 2026, 2:31 p.m. | The Hawaii Police Department has reopened Route 19 to all traffic.

Original Post: A section of Route 19 in South Hilo is closed following a traffic accident, and motorists are being urged to avoid the area for about the next hour, according to the Hawaiʻi Police Department.

The closure affects Route 19 between Kulana Street and Kapue Street. Police advised drivers to use alternate routes while emergency responders work at the scene.

Authorities have not released details about the crash or whether any injuries were reported. The cause of the accident also has not been disclosed.
