Wind advisory issued for portions of Hawai‘i Island

A wind advisory is in effect for six of the eight Hawaiian Islands starting at noon.

According to the National Weather Service, east-northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected for portions of O‘ahu, Maui, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe, Lana‘i and the Big Island.

The winds on Hawai‘i Island will mostly be felt in its interior, stretching from the north in Kohala to the south in Ka‘ū. The advisory is in place until 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Winds will accelerate downslope, near mountaintops and ridges, through gaps in the terrain and in areas typically exposed to strong trade winds, according to meteorologists.

Impacts include shingles torn off homes, down trees, blow away tents and awnings and driving may be difficult for drivers of high profile vehicles.
