10 drivers arrested for DUI during week of July 13-19 on Big Island roadways

Hawai‘i Island police continue their crackdown on driving drunk in Big Island roadways, arresting 10 motorists for DUI during the week of July 13-19.

None of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none were younger than 21 years old.

Police arrested 432 drivers for DUI so far this year, a 15.29% decrease from the 510 arrested during the same period last year.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also again concluded a weekly review of all updated crashes, reporting a total 558 major crashes so far this year, a slight 3.96% decrease compared with 581 major crashes during the same time last year.

Fatal crashes and fatalities, however, increased.

There have been 17 fatal crashes resulting in 19 fatalities as of July 19 on Big Island roadways, representing 30.77% and 35.71% spikes in fatal crashes and fatalities, respectively, compared with 13 fatal crashes resulting in 14 fatalities during the same time period in 2025.

Hawai‘i Police Department reports DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
