Speed limit decreases along potion of Pūʻainakō Street Extension in Hilo

Hawaiʻi County officials notify the public that beginning July 29 the speed limit is lowered on a section of Pūʻainakō Street Extension in Hilo.

Hawaiʻi County Department of Public Works said the speed limit along a portion of Highway 2000, between Komohana Street and a point about a half-mile east of Wilder Road, was reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph.

The reduction is part of a county effort to improve traffic safety in the area.

Plans are to permanently establish the reduced speed limit by seeking an amendment to county speed limit schedules. The new speed limit will be enforced under temporary authority acceptable under county codes until the amendment process is complete.

New speed limit signs are installed along the affected stretch of roadway.

Motorists are urged to watch for the updated signs, obey the new speed limit and use caution while traveling through the area.
