Salvation Army serves breakfast to firefighters who were battling Kawaihae Road fire

The Salvation Army Hawai‘i County Emergency Disaster Services team from the Honoka‘a Corps the morning of July 26 delivered breakfast to about 60 firefighters working to contain the Kawaihae Road fire in South Kohala.

Located in the Kawaihae Road and Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway area, the blaze — reported the evening of July 25 — scorched about 680 total acres by the time firefighters brought it under control later Sunday, with about 500 or so acres burned by the time Salvation Army volunteers served them breakfast.

It prompted a mandatory evacuation of about 50 residences in Kawaihae Village Subdivision and campers at Spencer Beach Park also were evacuated.

The Salvation Army team served the community’s first responders in coordination with the county as needed throughout firefighting efforts.
