Community members have an opportunity to help shape the future of the Waiākea Peninsula in Hilo by participating in an upcoming open house hosted by Hawai‘i Community Development Authority.
The open house is planned for 5 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at Pu‘u‘eo Community Center in Clem Akina Park, located at 145 Wainaku St. Area residents and stakeholders are encouraged to attend and provide input that will be used to assist development of a master plan for the peninsula region.
A master plan will establish a long-term vision to guide revitalization of properties along Banyan Drive and around the peninsula during the next 20 to 30 years. It also will identify actionable strategies to achieve that vision.
This is the first public engagement event in the planning process.
Participants will meet with Hawai‘i Community Development Authority staff members and the planning team to learn about the planning process and actively contribute ideas.

Interactive stations will focus on key land use topics such as public recreation, open space, cultural resources, economic revitalization, sea level rise, coastal resilience and transportation.
Community members can drop in any time during the open house.
No formal presentation is planned. Members of the public are urged to explore the interactive stations at their own pace, talk story with the planning team and leave written comments.
“We’re excited to launch this planning process by listening to the community,” said Hawai‘i Community Development Authority Executive Director Craig Nakamoto in an announcement about the upcoming open house. “Ideas and perspectives shared during this open house will help guide a master plan that reflects local values, community priorities and a shared vision for the future of the beloved Waiākea Peninsula.”
