16 motorists arrested for DUI during week of March 23-29 on Big Island roads

Hawai‘i Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who choose to drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roads, arresting 16 people for DUI during the week of March 23-29.

Five of those drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none were younger than 21 years old.

There have been a total of 198 DUI arrests so far this year, a 6.16% decrease from the 237 during the same period last year.

Kona claimed eight of those arrests, followed by Hilo with three and South Kohala and Puna each with two DUI arrests to round out the districts with the most arrests during the week.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes and discovered 249 major crashes so far this year, which is the same number of major crashes reported within the same time period last year.

There were four fatal crashes resulting in four fatalities as of March 29 on Big Island roadways compared with seven fatal crashes resulting in eight fatalities during the same time period in 2025.

That represents a 42.86% decrease in fatal crashes and 50% decrease in fatalities from last year during the same time period.

Non-traffic fatalities still stand at none, the same as last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
