Community invited to celebrate law enforcement during Officer of the Month luncheon

Hawai’i island residents are invited to attend the March Officer of the Month luncheon honoring Hawaiʻi Police Department officers Jason Cunefare and Lawrence Matsumoto for their exemplary service to the island.

The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Huggo’s Restaurant in Kona. Check-in begins at 10:40 a.m.

The committee said the luncheon is intended to show community support for Hawaiʻi County police officers.

In addition to the March honorees, the Hilo committee also will highlight the work of Officer Kaipo Aurello, who joined the Hawaiʻi Police Department in 2016.

Aurello began his career with Puna Patrol before transferring to Hilo Patrol, where he also served as a field training officer. He was recently promoted and assigned to the department’s Community Relations Section, where he focuses on recruitment and community outreach.

His outreach efforts include recurring appearances on “Hawaiʻi Island’s Most Wanted,” a segment of Safe Hawai’i broadcast on Nā Leo TV.

The committee added that the monthly recognition event aims to strengthen ties between law enforcement and the community while acknowledging officers’ contributions to public safety.

Tickets are $35 for nonmembers and $25 for members if purchased in advance.

At-the-door admission is $40 for nonmembers and $30 for members. Active law enforcement officers may attend for $25. Seating is limited, and organizers encouraged early ticket purchases.
