HPD: Two Charged in Robbery and Kidnapping Incident

A Kona man and woman are each facing various charges stemming from a robbery incident in Hilo and a kidnapping of a Volcano resident.

Police arrested 21-year-old Angelea Maldonado and 29-year-old Dane Frank Kendrick following an incident that took place on Tuesday, May 22 shortly after 3 p.m. The call came from an unidentified chain store, who told authorities that they had detained the two after catching them shoplifting inside the store. Kendrick allegedly used the identity of another man, who the two kidnapped prior to the attempted robbery incident, and the man came forward to store officials to say that his identity was used by the suspect.

An investigation found that the male suspect and his female companion entered the Volcano man’s home and demanded drugs. A bladed weapon was used to threaten the man, who was eventually forced inside a vehicle and driven to the store in question, where he was left with the vehicle while the two entered the store. He drove off with the vehicle and contacted the police.

According to police, both suspects were arrested on suspicion of shoplifting, terroristic threatening, and kidnapping. Maldonado was charged with suspicion, and posted $250 bail. She is released pending the investigation of the other charges.

Kendrick was charged with shoplifting, first-degree terroristic threatening, kidnapping, and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug. His bail is set at $71,000. He is currently under police custody at Hilo Medical Center for treatment of an unidentified condition, which happened during the investigation of the incident by detectives of the Area I Criminal Investigations Section.
