Free tribute concert for Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir set for Sunday at Rainbow Room in Hilo

A free tribute concert for guitarist and songwriter Bob Weir, a founding member of the American rock band the Grateful Dead, will be held Sunday at the Rainbow Room in Hilo.

According to a statement from Weir’s family that was posted on his website and social media pages, the musician died Jan. 10 from underlying lung issues after recently beating cancer. He was 78.

The free show features the band PunaKat, which will be joined by Steve Fundy of Uncle Charlie.

The concert, presented by The Booch Bar and Jahred Darius, will run from 5 p.m. to pau at 110 Keawe St.

A special “Grateful Grill” menu has been put together. The food is “served on San Francisco sourdough with a side of “Hell in a Bucket” fire roasted tomato soup.”

Darius said the “entire menu is grilled cheeses and everyone is named after a different Grateful Dead song.”

The Grateful Dead used to support their traveling by selling grilled cheeses in parking lots for a buck.
