UPDATE, Jan. 11, 6:20 p.m., Mahiai Street is open to all traffic according to the Hawaiʻi Police Department.

Original Post: Motorists are advised to avoid Mahiai Street near Railroad Avenue in South Hilo due to a traffic accident, according to a press release from the Hawaiʻi Police Department.

The area is expected to remain closed for up to three hours.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department has added that drivers should use alternate routes while officers respond to the scene and clear the roadway.
