Hawai’i Island DUI arrests drop slightly in early December, fatal crashes decrease
Hawai‘i Island police made nine arrests for driving under the influence during the week of Dec. 1 to 7, including one motorist involved in a traffic crash and one under the age of 21.
As of early December, DUI arrests have totaled 849 for the year, a 5.88% decrease from 902 during the same period last year. Meanwhile, the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reported 938 major traffic crashes on the island so far in 2025, marking a slight increase of nearly 2% compared to 920 crashes during the same period in 2024.
Fatal crashes have shown a notable decrease.
There have been 18 fatal crashes in 2025, resulting in 20 fatalities, compared to 25 fatal crashes and 28 fatalities for the same period last year. This represents a 28% decrease in fatal crashes and a 28.57% drop in fatalities.
The count for non-traffic fatalities remains at zero for both this year and the same period last year. In response to ongoing concerns about impaired driving, DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue across Hawai‘i Island during the holidays
