Photos: Vietnam Medal of Honor recipient interned at West Hawai‘i Veterans Cemetery
Community and family members gathered at West Hawai‘i Veterans Cemetery on Tuesday to honor veterans from Hawai‘i Island, including Army Sgt. 1st Class Rodney Yano, who was killed in Vietnam in 1969.
Yano, a recipient of the Medal of Honor, was buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. His mother’s wish was to bring him home to the Big Island.
While his mother wasn’t alive to see it after passing in 2006, Yano, a native of Kealakekua, was laid to rest in Kona during a special ceremony on Veterans Day. His surviving family members, including a brother, were in attendance.
Yano will be the first Medal of Honor recipient to be interned at the cemetery.
