Mana Road fire 65% contained; no residences or structures threatened

A fire on the Hiloside of Mana Road that broke out on Nov. 7 has scorched 2,100 acres and is now 65% contained.

No residences or structures are threatened by the blaze, which is seven miles from the Mauna Kea Access Road, according to a news release from Hawai‘i County Tuesday morning.

As of this morning, firebreaks have been cut completely around the burn area. The Hawaiʻi Fire Department, Hawaiʻi Division of Forestry and Wildlife and Pōhakuloa Training Area are extinguishing hot spots within 100 feet of the perimeter while Hawaiʻi National Guard helicopters conduct water drops on the interior. There are no impacts to the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge.

Light to moderate trade winds are forecast over the fire site today and tonight. A brief period of isolated showers is possible this afternoon. Smoke from hot spots may be visible at the fire site.

Along with Hawai‘i Fire Department, other agencies assisting in battling the blaze include: Hawaiʻi Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Hawaiʻi National Guard, County Department of Public Works, County Civil Defense Agency, Pōhakuloa Training Area, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Highways Division, and Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.
