Results from the 27th annual ‘Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament

Hawai‘i County Department of Parks and Recreation happily recently announced the results of the 27th annual ‘Ohana Shoreline Fishing Tournament, a three-day event that took place Aug. 15-17. 

Three days of fishing from Aug. 15-17 culminated in a weigh-in and awards ceremony Aug. 17 at Honoka‘a Sports Complex as participants arrived with their fresh catch in hand — each in many shapes, colors and sizes — to be weighed, clipped and recorded by Parks and Rec staff. 

“It’s inspiring to see participants of all ages — from keiki to kūpuna — coming together through this tournament,” said Mayor Hawai‘i County Kimo Alameda in the winners announcement. “This event reminds us of the importance of community and continuing traditions through generations.”

Nearly 300 entrants participated in six divisions this year.

Entrants competed for heaviest fish in the Men’s, Women’s, Teen, Keiki and Kupuna divisions, while in the ‘Ohana Division, family members teamed up to catch three species (menpachi, kupipi and po‘opa‘a) and were judged based on the combined weight of their catch. 

All participants were also entered into the Invasive Species category, which counted the number of fish — rather than weight — of three common invasive reef fish (ta‘ape, to‘au and roi).

Finally, all entrants could submit artwork that captured the theme of “‘Ohana and Fishing.” 

“Fishing is one of our most cherished cultural traditions, and events like this are a great way to celebrate and perpetuate this heritage while bringing together families and friends,” said Hawai‘i County Parks and Recreation Director Clayton Honma in the announcement.

Men’s Division (65 entrants)

• 1st: Jordan Kilkenny with 25 lbs ulua
• 2nd: Shayson Batin with 24 lbs ulua
• 3rd: Stephen Kilkenny with 21 lbs ulua
• 4th: Kamuela Andrade-Stout with 21 lbs ulua
• 5th: Dustin Martinez with 18 lbs ulua
• 6th: Donny Egusa with 17 lbs ʻomilu.
• 7th: Tommy Cabanting with 16 lbs kaku
• 8th: Tait Labra with 13 lbs ʻomilu.
• 9th: Bruce Kauwe-Decker with 12 lbs ʻomilu.
• 10th: Chauncen Labra with 6 lbs ʻomilu.

Women’s Division (31 entrants)

• 1st: Mistianne Kahoopii with 11 lbs ʻomilu.
• 2nd: Kiana Alejandro-Cazimero with 3 lbs roi.
