7.5 magnitude earthquake strikes off Russia coast; no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi

There is no tsunami threat to Hawai’i after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Friday afternoon near the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency.

The earthquake struck at approximately 4:38 p.m. and was six miles deep.

The earthquake was an aftershock of the magnitude 8.8 Kamchatka Peninsula earthquake that struck on July 29, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
