Police has requested a coroner’s inquest following the death of a Kailua-Kona bicyclist along Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway Thursday.

According to a Hawaii Police Department release, a 63-year-old Kailua-Kona male was found unresponsive near the 82-mile marker on Thursday morning. Witnesses said that the unidentified man was riding with a pack of fellow bikers when he started to fall behind, and was later found lying on the road. Early findings from authorities show that there was nothing that indicated that the man or his bicycle was struck by a vehicle.

The victim was taken to North Hawai’i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:40 a.m. The identity of the bicyclist has been withheld pending notification of family members.
