16-year-old Kailua-Kona girl critically injured in crash near Kīholo Bay Road
A 16-year-old Kailua-Kona girl was critically injured early Sunday morning (June 29) in a single-vehicle crash near the 83-mile marker on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway, also known as Highway 19, in North Kona in the vicinity of Kīholo Bay Road.
Hawai‘i Island police conducted a preliminary investigation upon responding to the scene of the crash just after 5 a.m. Sunday. It was determined that the 16-year-old was driving south in a black 2023 Toyota Camry, when it veered off the roadway, struck several large rocks and overturned multiple times.
The teen — the car’s sole occupant and who was wearing a seatbelt — was transported in critical condition to Queen’s North Hawai‘i Community Hospital in Waimea.
She is currently listed as stable.
Hawai‘i Police Department’s Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit initiated a major traffic collision investigation.
