24 motorists arrested for DUI during week of June 9-15 on Big Island roads
Hawai‘i Island police arrested 24 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of June 9-15, 10 of whom were involved in traffic crashes and two were younger than 21 years old.
There have been 432 DUI arrests so far this year on Big Island roadways, a 3.79% decrease compared with the 449 made during the same period in 2024.
Kona topped the number of weekly DUI arrests with 10 followed by Hilo with 7 and Puna with 3. Together, they accounted for 83% of the overall weekly total.
The three districts also have 89% of the total DUI arrests so far this year, with Kona at 158, Hilo with 144 and Puna with 44.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crash reports, finding 482 major crashes so far this year, a 5.47% increase from the 457 major crashes during the same time period last year.
There have been 12 fatal crashes and 13 fatalities on Big Island roads so far in 2025, representing a 20% decrease in fatal crashes and 23.52% in fatalities compared with the same time period in 2024.
The number of non-traffic fatalities, those not on a public roadway, remains at zero for the year, the same as 2024.
Hawai‘i Police Department reports DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
