Summit for Big Island ham radio operators aims to enhance emergency communications
As hurricane season approaches, a summit meeting on June 12 will bring together amateur radio operators to discuss ways to strengthen the community in the face of potential hazards.
The “Keanakolu Summit,” hosted by the County of Hawaiʻi Civil Defense Agency, will provide radio operators with valuable information, networking opportunities, and a platform to enhance the Civil Defense Auxiliary Communications Service.
The Auxiliary Communications Service plays a crucial role in sharing vital information across the island when hurricanes, wildfires, or other emergencies disrupt communications, disable phones, or damage the electrical power grid.
“They say, ‘when all else fails, amateur radio works,’ and ham radio operators are essential for community resilience throughout Hawaiʻi Island,” Mayor Kimo Alameda said. “The start of the hurricane season is an excellent time to strengthen the engagement with our island’s amateur radio operators.”
Governor Josh Green has declared June 2025 as Amateur Radio Month throughout Hawaiʻi, aligning with the beginning of the hurricane season, which is from June 1 to Nov. 30. Alameda has also proclaimed June as Amateur Radio Month in the County of Hawaiʻi, reinforcing this important initiative locally.
“It’s crucial to share credible, reliable information to protect people during an emergency situation,” said Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno. “Our partnership with amateur radio operators helps to make that happen, and we’re grateful for their support.”
Whether operators are returning partners or new to the Auxiliary Communications Service, all are welcome at the event.
The Keanakolu Summit will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, at Aunt Sally Kaleohano’s Lūʻau Hale in Hilo. RSVP by Monday, June 9, at 808-935-0031, or at civildefense@hawaiicounty.gov.
