High surf on Big Island’s north-facing shores prompts weather service advisory

8:32 p.m. update: The National Weather Service has issued a special marine warning for waters including the leeward and windward waters of Hawai’i Island.

The warning is in effect through 10:30 p.m.

Original post: A high surf advisory is now in effect on the north-facing shores of Hawai‘i and other islands.

A long-period north swell will build rapidly tonight, peak early Friday, then gradually diminish, according to the National Weather Service. Additionally, a shorter-period northwest swell will arrive on Friday.

Large surf of 14 to 18 feet is anticipated. The high surf advisory is currently in effect through 6 p.m. Friday.
