Update: Big Island flood advisory canceled
5:30 p.m. update: The flood advisory issued for portions of Hawai‘i County has been canceled. Radar shows that the heavy rain has diminished.
Original post: The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory through Sunday evening for the districts of North Kona, South Kona, Ka‘u, North Kohala and South Kohala on Hawai‘i Island.
A flood advisory means minor flooding is imminent or occurring. Due to the flood advisory, the Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency has advised the following:
- Flooding can be life-threatening. Residents in flood-prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.
- Drive with caution. Be on the alert for run-off, ponding of water, debris and poor visibility.
- Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around, don’t drown.
- If lightning threatens your area, the safest place to be is indoors.
Radar at 3:19 p.m. indicated pockets of heavy rain over leeward Hawai‘i Island and Ka‘u, according to the National Weather Service. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with the most persistent rainfall occurring around Kailua-Kona northward to near Puuanahulu
along Mamalahoa Highway.
