Flags at Half-Staff Tuesday for Police Week
Gov. Neil Abercrombie has ordered that all national and Hawaii flags at state offices be flown at half-staff Tuesday in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week.
The observance is in response to a proclamation issued by President Obama declaring that Police Week will be observed from Sunday through this coming Saturday. The president requested that governors fly the US flag at half-staff Tuesday in observance of both events, and encouraged homes and businesses to follow suit.
“We owe a profound debt to all those who have worn the badge, and to the families whose care enables them to serve with courage and pride,” the president’s proclamation said.
During Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, we recall the selflessness of our law enforcement officers and their families, and we honor all those who devote their lives to forging a stronger, safer America.”
Abercrombie said that the public can never repay the debt owed to those brave and dedicated members of our community “who have chosen to wear the badge.”
“The people of Hawai’i remember the selflessness and courage of our law enforcement officers and their families, not just during Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, but every day, as it is every day that these valiant men and woman must report to work throughout the state to protect us and make our neighborhoods safer.
“Let us also take time to remember those we have lost in the line of duty,” Abercrombie said. “We have an obligation to support their loved ones and ensure that their service and sacrifice will never be taken for granted.”
