3 inmates escape from Hale Nani reintegration facility in Pana‘ewa

Hawai‘i Police Department is searching for three inmates who escaped Friday afternoon from Hale Nani, a dorm-style facility that houses the reintegration program of Hawai‘i Community Correctional Center, in Pana‘ewa:

  • Joseph C. Fernandez is 35 years old, 5-foot-11 and weighs 195 pounds.
  • Kawai Pomroy is 41 years old, 6-foot-2 and weighs 260 pounds.
  • Clyde Loa is 31 years old, 5-foot-9 and weighs 225 pounds.

The three inmates allegedly escaped Hale Nani at approximately 4:30 p.m. by taking a metallic dark gray 2014 Nissan Altima with the Hawaiʻi license plate ZCK261, which is owned by a civilian employee.

Pomroy was first discovered missing. An emergency lockdown took place when staff discovered inmates Clyde T. Loa, 31, and Joseph C. Fernandez, 35, were also missing.

Around the same time, an employee discovered his car keys and vehicle missing and staff immediately called the Hawaiʻi Police Department and the Sheriffs Division.

Police are currently investigating how the inmates obtained the vehicle keys and escaped.

Police remain on scene. This is an active and ongoing investigation.

Loa was in custody for multiple counts of auto theft and resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle.

Pomroy was in custody for abuse of a household or family member.

Fernandez was in custody for probation revocation for a firearms violation.
