One of its greatest strengths: UH-Hilo continues to be one of most diverse universities in nation

When you’ve got it, you’ve got it, and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo has diversity in abundance.

UH-Hilo continues to be one of the most diverse universities in the nation, a title and honor it has maintained for several years.

The Big Island university leads the way in creating an inclusive campus environment and helping students succeed. It placed among the top universities in the nation this year in the latest U.S. News & World Report College Rankings.

The Hilo campus earned a diversity index score of 0.76, ranking as one of the most diverse universities in the country and coming in just behind prestigious institutions such as Stanford and Johns Hopkins.

That underscores the Big Island university’s dedication to fostering a welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds.

“Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths,” said UH-Hilo Chancellor Bonnie Irwin. “Having students from such a wide range of backgrounds enhances the learning experience for everyone.”

Among the University of Hawaiʻi 10-campus system, UH-Hilo and UH-Mānoa are classified as national universities, recognized for their broad academic offerings and focus on research and graduate education.

That national university status highlights UH-Hilo’s comprehensive academic portfolio and impact on higher education in Hawaiʻi and beyond.

In addition to its diversity, UH-Hilo ranked No. 111 nationally — and first in the state — for social mobility, reflecting its success in helping students from underrepresented communities overcome barriers and achieve academic and career success.

Its support for first-generation economically disadvantaged students reinforces its role in promoting upward mobility in Hawaiʻi.

UH-Hilo ranked No. 188 among top public universities, reaffirming its dedication to academic excellence.

Nationally honored programs such as the Hilo university’s School of Nursing, College of Business and Economics and Department of Psychology also prepare graduates for key roles in health care and business, strengthening Hawaiʻi’s workforce and driving economic growth.

“We are committed to ensuring that all students, regardless of background, have the tools and opportunities to succeed,” said Irwin. “These rankings show our efforts are having an impact.”
