Flood advisory in effect for Kona
The National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for the Kona area of the Big Island until 8 p.m. today because of the threat of flooding caused by excessive rainfall.
At 4:54 p.m., emergency management officials reported heavy rainfall over Kailua-Kona, with water on Kuakini Highway near Lako Street. Rain was falling at a rate of up to 1 inch per hour.
Rain rates are starting to decrease and should continue to dissipate throughout the evening.
Some locations where flooding is possible include Kailua-Kona, Hōlualoa, Honalo, Kahaluʻu-Keauhou and Kalaoa.
Minor flooding could happen on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams. Be careful of water over roadways.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
