North Kona water restriction downgraded to voluntary reduction

A North Kona water restriction has been downgraded as Hawai‘i County crews have repaired one of the deep wells, officials reported Monday.

According to the Department of Water Supply, customers are asked to voluntarily conserve water by 10%. This is a downgrade from the required 25% water reduction.

The restriction was initiated in August after two wells, including the Kalaoa Deepwell went offline. Officials say crews used a spare pump assembly previously procured, which expedited the repairs.

This voluntary conservation is for the following areas:

• Mākālei
• Kalaoa
• Kona Palisades
• Keāhole
• Palamanui
• Kohanaiki
• Kailua-Kona
• Kaloko
• Kaloko mauka
• Hualālai
• Honokōhau
• Kealakehe
• Keahuolū
• Keōpū
• Hōlualoa
• Wai‘aha
• Kahalu‘u
• Keahou

The county continues to ask customers to conserve drinking water, use water wisely, and not waste it. Taking short showers, fixing leaky plumbing and toilets, irrigating efficiently, and turning off the faucet while brushing teeth are easy ways to reduce water use.
