Sewage has been spilling into the ocean near and around the Kailua-Kona pier since Sunday afternoon and the Hawai‘i Department of Health advises the public to avoid going into the water there.

The state Health Department says the spill, which was caused by a clogged drain in a restroom, has been ongoing since 2:40 p.m. Sunday.

An unknown amount of sewage has spilled onto the pier and into the ocean.

Warning signs are posted and the public should stay out of the affected water until the issued wastewater discharge advisory is canceled.
