Detailed Forecast
Synopsis
The remnants of Hector will move in tonight and will produce another humid day on Sunday with some passing showers primarily over windward areas. Trade winds should return across the state by Sunday afternoon and become locally breezy on Monday. Our typical moderate to locally breezy trade wind weather is expected for the first half of next week.
Discussion
The remnants of Gilma is centered just northwest of Kauai this afternoon and continues to move westward. For tonight, we should see the trades fill in a bit more over the eastern half of the state and we should see the remnant moisture of Hector move in as well. Latest satellite imagery of the remnant moisture of Hector is not very impressive thus we are not expecting much in terms of rainfall amounts. Showers should be most active over windward Big Island tonight and possibly east Maui. The remnant moisture should keep the dewpoints high (low to mid 70s) though and another muggy night should be expected.
For Sunday, the remnant moisture of Hector should move into to the western half of the state and at the same time we should see moderate trade winds return across the state. Passing showers will focus over windward and mountain areas with a few making its way over leeward areas. Dewpoints will continue to remain on the higher side so although trades will return, it should still feel rather muggy on Sunday.
Starting Monday, we should return to our typical trade wind weather and we should see trades pick up to the moderate to locally breezy speeds with dewpoints back down to the upper 60s. Overall, a relatively dry trade wind pattern is expected during the first half of next week with some light showers moving into windward areas. Trade winds may weaken some by mid week as a trough drops southward far north of the state. At this time the trough is not expected to impact the state, but it could bring some lighter trade winds during the second half of next week.
Aviation
Southeasterly winds in the wake of the remnants of Gilma will gradually shift to easterly through tomorrow as a more typical trade wind pattern builds back in. Clouds and showers will be pulled up from the south to southeast today, then switch to the windward areas tonight through tomorrow.
No AIRMETs are in effect and none are expected.
Marine
Light to moderate southerly winds over the western end of the state will transition to moderate to locally fresh southeasterlies state-wide tonight as Gilma's remnant circulation moves off to the north-northwest. Easterly trades return by Sunday, then become locally strong Monday into the middle of next week.
East facing shores, currently seeing diminishing surf, will get a slight bump as returning trades increase into early next week. Small background swells from the south and southeast will maintain small surf along south facing shores. A small northwest swell will slowly diminish through the remainder of the weekend, allowing north facing exposures to return to typically tiny summertime conditions.
