Hawai‘i Island police respond to incident involving a firearm in Hāmākua over weekend

First responders were called out to a potential active shooter on Sunday near Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Elementary & Intermediate in Papa‘ikou off Māmalahoa Highway.

According to Hawai‘i Island police, there was a traffic collision near the school and the driver involved in the crash grabbed a rifle, loaded it and ran into the woods.

It is unknown if the driver has been apprehended at this time. It is also unclear if the individual threatened anyone.
