RIMPAC to bring military aircraft training to Hawai‘i Island

The Rim of the Pacific, also known as RIMPAC, will bring military aircraft training to Pōhakuloa Training Area starting July 8.

Depending on weather, jet engine and aircraft noise may be increased from July 8 through Aug. 2 over PTA from Kaneohe Bay to Kona. Intermittent daily flights are expected from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Fixed-wing aircraft flights will vary between fighters, heavy transport and jets.

RIMPAC is a biennial, international maritime exercise that sustains cooperative relationships critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes. This year’s training event started June 28.

Approximately 29 nations, 40 surface ships, three submarines, 14 national land forces, over 150 aircraft and more than 25,000 personnel will train and operate in and around the Hawaiian Islands during the exercise, which runs until Aug. 1. RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world’s oceans.

This year’s exercise includes humanitarian aid and disaster relief training, critical to ensuring military units and service members are ready to accomplish their mission and return home safely.
