Update: Flood advisory canceled for East Hawai‘i; watch remains in place statewide
5:06 p.m. May 11 update: The flood advisory is canceled for portions of East Hawai‘i.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, radar shows that the heavy rain has diminished. Flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat.
A Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. for all Hawaiian Islands.
Original post: A flood advisory is in effect until 6:45 p.m. for portions of East Hawai‘i.
At 3:35 p.m., radar indicated a nearly stationary band of heavy rain anchored over upslope portions of the South Hilo District. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Mountain View, Papa‘ikou, Kea‘au, Glenwood, Pepe‘ekeo, Honomū, Volcano, Wainaku and Pauka‘a.
Minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas, and in streams is anticipated.
This advisory may need to be extended beyond 6:45 p.m. if flooding persists.
