Update: Police identify motorcyclist killed in Hilo crash involving impaired driver

Update at 12:56 p.m. March 31: The motorcyclist who died in a two-vehicle collision the night of March 29 in Hilo has been identified as 26-year-old Jared Tellio-Flournoy of Hilo.

The driver of the other vehicle, 26-year-old Sterling Stroud of Volcano, was not injured. He was charged with first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

Stroud’s bail was set at $10,250. He is being detained at the Hilo Police Station pending his initial court appearance scheduled April 1.

Original post: A 26-year-old Hilo motorcyclist is dead after a two-vehicle crash Friday night in Hilo involving an impaired driver.

Police responded just after 11:30 p.m. to the scene of the collision on Kalanianaʻole Street, between Kauhane Avenenue and Pua Avenue, and learned a 2002 Toyota pickup truck was reversing out of a driveway onto Kalanianaʻole Street when it collided with a 2007 Honda motorcycle traveling west.

The motorcyclist was located unresponsive at the scene. He was transported to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:04 a.m. Saturday. An autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The motorcyclist’s identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

A motorcycle helmet was located at the scene; however, it is unknown if it was being worn at the time of the crash.

The driver of the pickup truck, 26-year-old Sterling Stroud from Volcano, was not injured. He was arrested for first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

Stroud is in custody at the Hilo Police Station pending further investigation.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department’s East Hawaiʻi Traffic Enforcement Unit also responded to the scene and is continuing to investigate. Police think impairment and speed appear to be primary factors in the crash.

This is the 12th traffic fatality so far this year compared with 5 traffic fatalities during the same time period last year.
