4 p.m. Jan. 17 update: A High Wind Warning for the Big Island’s summits is now in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday.

West winds 50 to 60 mph with localized gusts to 80 mph are anticipated.

Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.

Be prepared for road closures. Postpone travel to the summits until conditions improve.

Original post: The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for the highest summits of the Big Island, which will take effect this evening and last through Wednesday night.

Wind speeds at the summit level for the Big Island will decrease briefly through the day today. Stronger winds at summit level above High Wind Warning thresholds are expected to start later tonight ahead of an approaching cold frontal system.

Southwest winds of 55 to 70 mph with gusts over 90 mph are possible on the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
