Flash flood watch issued for Big Island

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flash flood watch for all of the Big Island from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon.

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible as a Kona low develops to the west of Kaua‘i and increases southerly flow across the state.

The moist and unstable air mass will move northward into the islands today through Thursday, bringing possible flash flooding and thunderstorms to Kaua‘i and O‘ahu starting today.

The potential for flash flooding and thunderstorms expands to Maui County and the Big Island on Wednesday and Thursday.

Flood prone roads and other low-lying areas could be closed because of elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas could receive more significant flooding and property damage because of rapid runoff.

The public is advised to monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.
