Update: High surf advisory extended for north- and west-facing shores of Big Island

4:21 p.m. update on Friday: The National Weather Service extended the high surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores from North Kohala to South Kona, through Saturday evening.

Beach-goers, swimmers and surfers are advised to exercise caution and heed all advice given by ocean safety officials.

Original post: A high surf advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday for west-facing shores of the Big Island, specifically in Kohala and Kona, as a large northwest swell is expected to produce extra large surf along better exposed shorelines.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu forecasts surf up to 8 feet in the advisory areas.

Moderate impacts can be expected, with strong breaking waves and strong currents making swimming dangerous.

The public is advised to heed all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
