Part-time Kaʻū Hoa Pili ʻĀina Training Program filling 10 positions

Ka ‘Ohana O Honu‘apo Board members are recruiting 10 young-adult volunteer stewards for a
part-time, four-month pilot program that may potentially be extended if capacity allows.

The Kaʻū Hoa Pili ʻĀina Training Program, beginning on Oct. 25, focuses on pono stewardship practices at Punaluʻu and various other sites in Kaʻū. Haumāna will work closely with the members of Ka ʻOhana O Honuʻapo and Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund and under the direction of a coordinator.

Trainees will receive a stipend of $1,000 per month over this four-month period to cover basic
living expenses. This work is being offered as a part-time seasonal position by Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund (with Ka ‘Ohana O Honu‘apo) and is being funded by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority as part of its destination management and community efforts.

Responsibilities and duties of the trainees:

• Participate in and complete a CPR and First Aid training
• Attend all class scheduled events (one to two days per week)
• Attend all stewardship-related opportunities offered in Kaʻū during the 4-month training period
• Actively engage in stewardship learning opportunities
• Learn and, if appropriate, lead protocols
• Communicate to coordinator and KOOH Board Members on weekly-basis
• Engage with visitors / tourists and effectively communicate pono behaviors and safety protocols
• Act as model citizens
• Plan and participate in an end of program hōʻike

No previous stewardship experience required.

The stewards-in-training must be a resident of Kaʻū Moku and at least 18 years of age. Reliable
transportation required (must be able to get to all required events). Must be able to walk at least one mile on uneven ground (lava flows, forests, beaches, or loko iʻa).

Must be willing to learn new things and embrace Hawaiian culture and protocols. Must possess a hiking backpack (day pack size) and a water bottle (at least 32 oz). Must have a positive attitude and be an active participant in your own learning.

Position open until filled, but expected to begin on Oct. 25. This training program is being offered by Ka ‘Ohana O Honu‘apo as a volunteer/intern opportunity, and the stipends provided are intended to cover basic living expenses.

As stipends are generally considered taxable income, recipients will be responsible for their
own withholding taxes. This position does not imply that trainees are employees of Ka ‘Ohana O Honu‘apo or Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund.

Trainees will be expected to sign Ka ‘Ohana O Honu‘apo/Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund liability and risk acknowledgment (waivers) forms, and any volunteer waivers provided by other nonprofits or landowners.
