Hilo man charged in connection with theft of UH-Hilo van, another theft of Milwaukee brand toolbox

A Big Island man is facing charges connected to two separate reported thefts earlier this year.

Logan Arruda-Lorenzo, a 32 year-old from Hilo, is being charged with first-degree theft and first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle in connection with the June 16 theft of a Ford van from the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and second-degree theft related to the theft of a Milwaukee brand rolling toolbox and its contents on April 28 from a residence on South Wilder Road in Hilo.

Arruda-Lorenzo made his initial appearance Tuesday in Hilo Circuit Court in the van theft case. His bail is set at $75,000. He appeared June 28 in Hilo Circuit Court on Friday afternoon in connection with the toolbox theft. His bail was maintained at $10,000.

First-degree theft is a Class B felony punishable by either a 10-year prison term or 4 years probation and up to 18 months in jail. Second-degree theft is a Class C felony that carries a penalty of either a 5-year prison term or 4 years probation and up to 12 months in jail.

The cases were initiated by the Hawai‘i Police Department’s South Hilo Patrol and the felony investigation was led by the Crime Reduction Unit of the department’s Area I Criminal Investigation Section. The case is being prosecuted by Hawai‘i County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Soong.
