UPDATE: Minor coastal flooding along low-lying Big Island shorelines remains a threat

Update at 5:15 p.m. Aug. 1: The coastal flood statement for all of the Big Island issued during the weekend by the National Weather Service in Honolulu has been extended through Thursday afternoon during times of high tide.

Isolated minor flooding can be expected on vulnerable low-lying coastal roadways, docks, boat ramps, marina parking lots and other coastal infrastructure.

Because of the continued threat of coastal flooding, Hawai’i County Civil Defense reminds the public that flooding of beaches and minor coastal erosion can occur and all property and vessels should be secured.

Original story: The National Weather Service issued a coastal hazard message for all Hawai’i Island shorelines.

The message, sent from Hawai’i County Civil Defense, said some coastal flooding is expected, starting Sunday and lasting through Wednesday afternoon.

The most dangerous time for flooding may be from 12p.m. to 6:00 pm.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways and move electronics, vehicles, secure watercraft and move other valuables to higher ground.

Boat owners should monitor their vessels to ensure mooring lines don’t get too tight and to be aware of overwash around boat ramps.
