Update 2: Main brush fire put out; Kamaoa Road in Naʻalehu now open

Update at 7 p.m. Monday: Kamaoa Road is now open. Hawaiʻi Fire Department remains at the scene to mop up a brush fire.

Update 3 p.m. Monday: A brush fire burned about 42 acres in Naʻalehu. The main fire has been put out. There were no evacuations, with a garage damaged. Road closure remains in effect.

Original post: Due to a brush fire, motorists are advised to avoid Kamaoa Road between Lewa Lani Street and Konohiki Road in Naʻalehu.

The road is closed in this section. Use South Point Road as an alternate route.

There are no communities or structures reported threatened at this time, according to the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency.
