A standoff that forced the closure of a Hilo road for hours ended peacefully

A barricaded male at a self-storage unit — reportedly with a weapon — in Hilo resulted in a six-hour standoff with Hawai‘i Police Department Tuesday night, authorities confirmed.

Read updated story with the arrest of an O’ahu 36-year-old with outstanding arrests warrants for a series of violent offenses.

This morning, police report no hostages were involved and the standoff ended peacefully. There was no weapon on the suspect when he was finally taken into custody. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Hawai‘i police alerted the public to incident at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday sending a text alert indicating police activity closed a portion of Kalanikoa Street between Pi‘ilani and Kuawa Streets. The area didn’t reopen till six hours later when another text alert was sent at 12:15 a.m. indicating the road was fully open.
