18 motorists arrested for DUI on Big Island during week of Feb. 20 – 26, 2023

During the week of Feb. 20-26, 2023, Hawai’i Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

One driver was involved in a traffic accident and another driver was under age 21.

So far this year, there have been 164 DUI arrests compared with 182 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.9 percent. 

After a review of all updated crashes, Hawaiʻi Police Department’s Traffic Services Section shows there have been 147 major traffic crashes so far this year compared with 116 during the same period last year, an increase of 31 percent.

To date, there have been four fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities.

On Feb. 7, one fatal crash was reclassified with the manner of death due to natural causes. One fatal crash had multiple deaths.

In the same period last year, there were six fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities.
