16 Motorists Arrested For DUI

The Hawai‘i Police Department during the week of July 4-10 continued its crackdown on motorists on Big Island roadways who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.

Sixteen motorists were arrested throughout the week for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Three of the drivers were younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 544 DUI arrests compared with 616 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.7%. There have been 407 major accidents so far this year, the same number as during the corresponding time period last year.

To date, there have been 19 fatal crashes, resulting in 21 fatalities, this year compared with 13 fatal crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities, during the same time frame last year. This represents an increase of 46.2% for fatal crashes and 61.5% for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
