Quinton Loder is building a community – a smart, funny, brave, supportive community.

Loder, the improv coach at the Aloha Theatre, has created the Big Island Improv Jam, an improv troupe that meets the first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at the theater in Kainaliu.

It’s not just for pros, either.

In fact, community members without any experience are encouraged to join the free monthly event as the hourlong workshop sessions are a way for people to connect and have fun.

Some skill is required. Being able to think on your feet and listen help with putting together a good impromptu performance. But all those attributes can be taught and improved with practice.
The most important thing is to be willing to give it a shot and be willing to have fun.

Kerry Matsumoto, a jam member who has taken improv classes at the theater, said the experience as has been life-changing for her.

“It’s fabulous,” she said. “It’s so fun and it’s for everybody. Everybody goes, ‘Oh, I can’t do improve, you have to be funny.’ No, you really don’t. You have to be able to walk out and listen to somebody, what they say.”
