Starting this week, crews will be inspecting utility pole attachments at homes and businesses around the Big Island.

Hawaiian Electric has contracted with McLean Engineering to perform the inspections, which will begin in Hilo and Puna and then continue north and around the island through December 2023. McLean will document and inventory the poles and attachments as required by a state Public Utilities Commission order.

Inspections will take place Monday through Saturday, and contactors will be in marked vehicles or on foot, wearing a McLean uniform and carrying a Hawaiian Electric contractor ID badge. No one from McLean or Hawaiian Electric will request to enter a home or business.

There could, however, be times when McLean inspectors might need to enter private property, such as a yard, to access a utility pole. In these instances, crew members will make their presence known before accessing the pole.

Electric service will not be impacted.
