Service Member Dies in Off Duty Incident Aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii
A U.S. Marine stationed at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, or MCBH, in Honolulu, died while swimming in the waters near North Beach, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 24. According to a press release from MCBH, Installation first responders and members of the Honolulu Fire Department responded to the scene and began a coordinated search after receiving a call for emergency services.
After locating the service member, first responders administered lifesaving measures and transported the Marine to a local hospital. The Marine was later pronounced deceased by competent medical authorities.
The next of kin of the deceased have been notified and a Casualty Assistance Calls Officer has been assigned to provide resources and assistance. The incident is under investigation by NCIS and local authorities.
This is the second fatality reported in the past week at MCBH. According to KHON2, a 29-year-old sailor assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit One died during a training exercise at the MCBH on April 17.
