Big Island Police Arrest 23 Motorists for DUI

Big Island police continue their crackdown on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant.

During the week of April 18-24, police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. One was younger than 21.

So far this year, there have been 346 DUI arrests compared with 404 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.4%. There have been 234 major accidents so far this year compared with 251 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.8%.

To date, there have been 10 fatal crashes on Big Island roadways, resulting in 12 fatalities, compared with eight fatal crashes, resulting in eight fatalities, for the same time period last year. This represents is an increase of 25% for fatal crashes and 50% for fatalities.

Police said DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
