Kona Event Commemorates National Crime Victims’ Rights Week on Monday
This year marks the 41st anniversary of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, and Hawai‘i Island will commemorate the event beginning on Monday.
The nationwide week of remembrance is to a way to honor crime victims and survivors, as well as those in our community committed to serving victims. The theme of this year’s event is “Rights, Access, Equity, For All Victims.”
On Monday, April 25 at 11 a.m., the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney will be kicking off the celebration by hosting a resource event, within the West Hawai‘i Civic Center. As part of the Peace Garden project, the public will have an opportunity to paint a rock in honor of loved ones who have lost their lives due to crime. These rocks will be displayed within the Office’s Kona Peace Garden. The office will also be displaying the “Clothesline Project,” which is a visual display of T-shirts designed and decorated by victims of crimes committed here on Hawai‘i Island.
“Each year our office participates in National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, where we host programs, coordinate awareness campaigns, and facilitate community outreach to support and help victims of crime in our community,” said Hawaii County Prosecuting Attorney Kelden Waltjen in press release. “Please join us next week at one of our five events across Hawai‘i Island. Mahalo to our Victims Assistance Unit, Restorative Justice Team, and Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Group for all of your hard work and coordination of this year’s festivities.”
