The state Department of Health reported 1,327 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, April 13, bringing the statewide total to 243,299. Eight new fatalities were reported.
A total of 160 new infections were identified Wednesday on the Big Island. Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense reported Wednesday afternoon that, according to the DOH, there are 248 active cases and four people are hospitalized on the island.

Of those total cases, 8,560 required hospitalization with 26 currently hospitalized. At least 1,390 have died since the pandemic began. Hospitalization data is updated Monday through Friday, except on state and federal holidays.
“While the Island of Hawai’i is categorized by the CDC as low risk, coronavirus is still within our community,” said the weekly COVID informational update from Civil Defense.
It is recommended as a best practice to:
Wear a mask around vulnerable populations, when in crowded areas or where there is little to no distancing available in public.
Wash hands frequently and use hand sanitizer.
Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces regularly.
Stay home if you’re sick.
The county will continue to have available hand sanitizing stations and Big Island residents are welcome to wear masks at county facilities, according to the Civil Defense message.
