Earth Day Events Abound in April

A variety of free in-person and virtual activities throughout the month of April are taking place in honor of Earth Day 2022.

Lā Honua Earth Month activities will include opportunities for K-12 students and their ‘ohana to embark on huaka’i (journeys, trips) at locations around the island and participate in virtual symposiums courtesy Hawai‘i Community College and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo.

“Hawaiʻi Community College and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo have a long standing tradition of celebrating Lā Honua Earth Day Fair with local K-12 students,” Lā Honua Earth Month organizers stated in a news release on the programs. “This year, we are offering six huakaʻi, a virtual symposium made up of 12 sessions, and school garden work days at six different Hawai’i Island schools. We encourage teachers and ‘ohana to connect K-12 students with the values of mālama ʻāina through these events.”

Huaka‘i begin today, Saturday, April 2 with opportunities at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center and Kahaluʻu Kūāhewa in Kona and continue on several dates through April. The virtual symposium sessions begin April 7 and cover a wide range of topics, including protecting native species, highlighting sustainable local business, and getting involved with local activism.

In addition to events designed for K-12 students, Lā Honua Earth Month is offering many events for Hawai‘i CC and UH Hilo students, faculty and staff.
